Bushy Tail

When I was a kid, we would decorate our bicycles by using a piece of hay rope to tie a squirrel tail to the back fender. (The city kids had colorful plastic streamers for their handlebars.) This squirrel would have made me the envy of the neighborhood!

Bowhunter's Dream

With bow season under way, here's a great buck standing sideways so hunters can visualize the shot they would make.

Deer Messin' with Me?

A practical joke seems to be spreading among the local deer population: "Stand in that hole and stick your tongue out at the camera."

Better Best Fox

On September 1, I posted the best fox picture I had at that time. This week I got a better one.

Twins from a Twin

One of my brothers, himself a twin, sent me this photo of twin fawns on our family farm in southwestern Ohio.

What's the Buzz, Vulture?

Not a great photo, but I'm pretty sure this is a turkey vulture, also known as a turkey buzzard. The bald red head is the tip off. (Reminder: Click to enlarge.)

Certainly Not Twins

These two bucks have different sized and shaped racks and different colored hair. Also, note the color difference of their front legs.

A One and a Two

Last week the first turkey appeared in several months; this week there are two.

Nature in a Nutshell

While the four young deer focus on eating, oblivious to their surroundings, the one that has survived to adulthood is most wary of potential danger in the area.

The Nose Knows

Just in case you've ever wondered what a deer's nose looks like up close and personal.

Face-Off

These two don't seem quite sure what to make of each other.

Oddity of the Week

While I know this is simply me walking by the camera, something about this picture is just plain creepy. (As always, click to enlarge.)

Talkin' Turkey

I hadn't seen a turkey in a few months, but within 24 hours of tossing a couple of cups of shelled corn on the ground, this hen appeared.

Find the Hidden Animal

Sometimes it takes a few seconds to figure out what caused the trail cam to snap a picture.

The Healing Power of Winter

I don't believe this deer would have survived such a serious injury during the muggy bug-filled months of Summer.

Injuries

Trail cams have shown me that there are some real survivors in the woods. Tomorrow I'll show you another

Remember the '60s?

You think maybe there are some magic mushrooms in the woods?

Ground Level, Part II

This is probably the closest image of a squirrel I have. Setting the trail cam on the ground has opened up many new possibilities.

From the Ground Floor Up

I learned this week that you can get some very interesting images by setting your trail camera on the ground instead of strapping it to a tree.

Little Did I Know...

A trail cam may do more than capture images of wildlife. Little did I know that my cat (named Luggage) travels over a half a mile without me sometimes.

Squirreling Away Some Food

When I threw a bucket of hickory nuts on the ground, these critters quickly arrived.

Great Heron. Not So Great Picture

Unfortunately, this Great Blue Heron arrived at the time of the morning when the sun directly hits this spot. It would have been a really nice picture an hour later.

One of a Kind

According to the National Opossum Society's Web Page, this is North America's only marsupial mammal. Learn more at www.opossum.org

Buck 'N Bunny

For the next couple of days, I'll feature animals making their first appearance in my blog. Today you get a pretty good look at a rabbit.

What the Heck?

I doubt that I'll EVER know what showed up in this picture.

Clash of Heads

Learn from my mistakes: When you set up your camera, make sure there are no weeds, stems or small branches in the shot, as the flash will reflect off them at night.

Mystery Bird

It doesn't take a large animal to cause a trail cam to take a photo. Can anyone identify the bird in flight? (Click on photo to enlarge.)

Snowy Night

With temperatures in the 90s today, perhaps this photo will cool you off a bit.

Mineral Lick

Companies sell a lot of great products meant to attract deer. I use an inexpensive trace minerals block. (And also forgot to check the AM/PM thing again!)

Crawdad Hunting

Try setting up a trail cam near a watering hole in a creek. Every creature in the woods needs a drink of water every now and then.

Gray Fox

This is probably my best picture so far of a fox. It's also a good reminder to check the clock on your camera each time you visit it; This photo was snapped at 10:13PM, not 10:13AM.
