Remember the Failed Suet Spot Experiment?

Although the suet spot did bring some interesting visitors, HERE is the one I was targeting...finally!

Though you may have never actually seen a Pileated Woodpecker in the woods, I'll bet you've HEARD one before. Check out this great page from the Ohio Division of Natural Resources (look for the "Listen" button):

  1. WOW, that is one loud bird! lol I don't think I've ever heard that one in the woods before. BTW, while we are on the subject of woodpeckers I have a question for you. Once while hunting I came across a large standing dead tree trunk. The trunk had several small holes in it from top to bottom and each hole had an acorn crammed into it. It was the oddest thing I had ever seen and everyone I ask had no idea what put them there. Any guesses if this was done by a woodpecker or another bird/animal? Thanks for the link you posted, as always it was interesting reading.

  2. Hey Mikey - I've been out of town and am behind in responding to your great comments. For this particular one - were you east or west of the Mississippi River when you found the tree filled with acorns?

  3. Hello Steve, the tree was in the woods of the Hanging Rock Strip Mines located east of Ironton, OH. I used to hunt there before they turned it into a four wheeler trail park.

  4. I don't know for sure, Mikey, but what makes me think you ARE correct is that I discovered that in the far West (mostly California), there actually is a bird named the Acorn Woodpecker - that specifically does exactly what you described!
Seems likely to me that their Ohio cousins might do the same thing.
